Merry October!

There is just something so special and perfect about October. I don’t know if it is like this everywhere else in the world but in the region I grew up (Southern Minnesota / Midwest) it has always been the time where it perfectly transitions between the heat of summer and the upcoming cold of winter. It feels exactly how Autumn looks on Tumblr and Hipster blogs; all the oranges, reds, yellows, and coffee and dreary but beautiful skies and the occasional rain which really just let’s you put on giant over-sized sweaters and light a candle. And that’s not even considering the fact that my favorite holiday is in October, Halloween has been my favorite for as long as I can remember. I love the fanfare of costumes and spooky things and CANDY ! Just….it’s 31 days of heaven drifting down to grace us with it’s presence.

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s dig into ‘Prompt-tober’! I haven’t gotten any prompts as of yet (which makes me a little :( to be honest) but it is also a nice chance for me do pick out something that will be helpful not only to meet a daily writing goal but with my NaNoWriMo project. I’ve managed to pin-point an idea for my novel next month and while I got a very, very,  general outline I need to flush things out more. Which makes finding a character building exercise a really great way to start this adventure. I found this one on the NaNoWriMo Blog and thought it was a helpful place to start in understanding my main character. So here we go; day one of ‘Prompt-tober!’

  1. Name: Audrey (or Avery I haven’t decided yet. Thoughts?) Zinke
  2. Age: 27
  3. Height: 5’5″
  4. Eye color: Honey Brown
  5. Physical appearance: Medium brown hair that ombres out into a lavender, Average weight (140-160ish),  Essentially I picture her as a taller version of Mae Whitman
  6. Strange or unique physical attributes: A collection of moles on her left temple right near her hair line, three outside the hair line and two just inside, a long scare down her right forearm from a car accident when she was young; window broke and glass cut down & got stuck.
  7. Favorite clothing style/outfit: Vintage; pants skinny like those in the 50’s, high-waist shorts/skirts, pencil skirts & full skirts, loves a unique neckline in her shirts and dresses.
  8. Where does he or she live? What is it like there? Hometown: Cochran, Kansas. Between Topeka & Kansas City, so she’s always been exposed to larger cities but Cochran feels smaller, but not suffocating. Went to college at the University of Kansas in Lawrence and studied communications and history. Now lives in Kansas City working as a substitute high school history teacher, and freelances for online blogs. She like’s it enough, but she’d love to get outside of Kansas though and experiences new places.
  9. Defining gestures/movements (i.e., curling his or her lip when he or she speaks, always keeping his or her eyes on the ground, etc.): Fidgety hands; talks with them, rubs her pointer finger against her thumbnail often without even being aware but most when she is nervous or anxious. Also tends imitate the BeWitched nose wiggle to make people laugh.
  10. Things about his or her appearance he or she would most like to change: Little things from day to day, but overall she is comfortable. It wasn’t always that way but at this point in her life she is good with herself.
  11. Speaking style (fast, talkative, monotone, etc.): The more excited she is the faster she talks, her voice is a little deeper than most expect and gets raspy often.  When she films she has to have cards or notes so she stays on topic and slows down to not jumble all her words together.
  12. Pet peeves: Lateness, arrogance, how long video editing & uploading takes her.
  13. Fondest memory: Going to a concert (Paramore) concert with her best friends from high school a year after they graduated and had returned from college.
  14. Hobbies/interests: Everything and anything pop-culture, she’s been obsessed since she was a kid. She also likes to pretend she is okay at photography. Watching other people cook because she can’t to save her life.
  15. Special skills/abilities: She is vibrant and personable which comes in handy when she decided to start making her own online videos discussing pop-culture events (The A to Z with Audrey (Avery?) Zinke) and then interacting with the fans she gained as it all picked up. Writing has always come easy to her so the freelance she does for online stuff doesn’t overwhelm her with her other responsibilities, which makes multi-tasking another skill.
  16. Insecurities: Taking a leap & falling flat, she’s lived a comfortable and happy life so far but she’d like just a little more but it scares her to lose almost everything and maybe have to come back home with her tail between her legs. Or the possibility of a leap going so swimmingly she changes without noticing and becomes unrecognizable to her loved ones.
  17. Quirks/eccentricities: Has to alphabetize everything; books, CD’s, movies, spices, toiletries.
  18. Temperament (easygoing, easily angered, etc.): Mostly easy going, triggers can hit randomly & hard though.
  19. Negative traits: Hard on herself most but expects a lot of others too.
  20. Things that upset him or her: Loved ones being hurt/sad/upset, fictional characters/worlds, her love life occasionally.
  21. Things that embarrass him or her: People rolling their eyes or mocking her web-show & think it is pointless, silly, and a waste of her time/talent.
  22. This character is highly opinionated about: Pop-culture; discussing it, defending her love of it, the “frivolousness” of it all.
  23. Any phobias? Not big on being on water, gets sea-sick easily. Failure, being alone forever.
  24. Things that make him or her happy: Doing her web-show & sharing that passion with the people who watch her and comment on her stuff, being with her friends, watching as kids understand the things she is teaching them, writing a particularly good line.
  25. Family (describe): Mom (Elizabeth), Dad (Killian), sister (Charlotte [goes by Charlie]), brother (Illan).
  26. Deepest, darkest secret: She lost her grandmother’s favorite ring (it had been in her family for generations) when she was nine, and told nobody ever.
  27. Reason he or she kept this secret for so long: Watching how sad her grandmother was for weeks was the most afraid and angry (at herself) she had ever been. She didn’t think she could stand the disappointment from her grandma and parents.
  28. Other people’s opinions of this character (What do people like about this character? What do they dislike about this character?): Her friends and family enjoy her passion and spunk, they know she is loyal and and kind. Some see her as pukey and annoying, others find her love for celebrities and entertainment as shallow and view her show as her just wanting to be famous for doing nothing.
  29. Favorite bands/songs/type of music: She likes a little of everything, she tends to be pretty “on trend” with popular music but likes some lesser known stuff that gets pointed out to her.
  30. Favorite movies: Anything classic Disney, her mom raised on her on Audrey/Marilyn/Brando/James Dean so she likes a lot of their well known stuff, but she also likes the cheesy rom-coms.
  31. Favorite TV shows: So many, she likes to keep up with the popular ones, ones winning awards and always talked about.
  32. Favorite books: Her parents both read a lot to her & her siblings growing up; everything from Austen and Bronte to Stephen King and Hemingway. She’s also loved any and all of the popular YA series; Potter, Hunger Games, Twilight, Divergent.
  33. Favorite foods: Chicken. Mostly because you can make it in so many ways and it’s relatively easy to cook. But she also loves pasta and soups which nobody in her family understands.
  34. Favorite sports/sports teams: She’s never been to big on it but her family has always supported the Huskers (dad went to school there) the Royals (mom just likes watching the men in the pants but oddly still knows a lot about the sport), her brother likes basketball but never puts anyone through watching it with him.
  35. Political views: Liberal.
  36. Religion/philosophy of life: Be you, be kind and thoughtful, work hard, have passion, and support those who support you.
  37. Physical health: Good.
  38. Dream vacation: Visit the place her family is from in Greece, her great-grandparents moved to the US when they were in their twenties & she’s always heard about it but never got to travel there yet.
  39. Description of his or her house: Her apartment is a two bedroom loft space, she has a roommate (Lorelai). The living room and kitchen are open and one large space.
  40. Description of his or her bedroom: Up on the higher level of the loft, mint green walls filled with photos & posters & quotes. A double bed with a canopy. A desk in the corner of the room near a window for natural light when she films, a small walk in closet, & a couple dressers.
  41. Any pets? Lorelai brought a calico cat into the apartment but Audrey/Avery has sorta fallen for him hard.
  42. Best thing that has ever happened to this character: The offer to turn her web show into a real show.
  43. Worst thing that has ever happened to this character: Her mom’s cancer scare.
  44. Superstitions: She does have “lucky” items; a key chain her best friend, Oliver, bought her back from when his family went to Disneyland, some jewelry from her mom and grandmothers. She prefers odd numbers to evens, will cross her fingers for things she really hopes for.
  45. Three words to describe this character: Passionate, Tenacious, & Meticulous.
  46. If a song played every time this character walked into the room, what song would it be? Dream Lover – Bobby Darin

This needs some more work and thought but for now it’s a good start, gives even myself a better understanding of the character I’ve started to put together and create an entire novel around. I sure hope I get some prompts soon because I am anxious to get some good writing out!
